Three weeks ago Ruby had surgery to fix her thumb that was stuck, called Trigger Thumb.
She was a champ. We realized something was wrong back in July and one day
her thumb bent and didn't go back. We soon found ourselves in a plastic surgeons office
and making plans to have her thumb corrected. I would have been more weary of doing
surgery but Ruby already been under general anesthesia with her ear tubes and she
did fine. I also felt comfortable with the doctor, who is the brother of a doctor that I see.
I felt confident that this was the right choice and it would be an easy fix.
It was hard letting her go out with the anesthesiologist. I sat in agony for 30 minutes while
we waited, wondering if we had done the right thing. Lucky for us it wasn't a long
surgery. Pretty soon she was back in our arms. She was upset for a while but
soon she calmed down and ate some cookies and juice and watched Sesame
Street in Spanish. After we left she was fine. Zack had a 5 year appt that same day and
by the time we went to that an hour later she was running around like nothing
had ever happened. She didn't appreciate the bandages on her hands but she got used to it.
This was while we waited 45 minutes for her prescriptions that we didn't even use.
I don't normally let her crawl around the car unbuckled while i'm driving.
The night of the surgery I caught her playing in the sink and she had drenched her hole hand.
The bandages were soaked all the way through. Luckily I had picked up some extra supplies
knowing this might happen. I had to unwrap the whole thing, and it was nasty. Good bye cute pink
bandages, hello blue and green. She picked them out...
Her first bath was entertaining. I put her hand in a bag and wrapped a rubber band around it.
I quickly got her in and washed and out and in that short amount of time her hand was purple.
Nothing like cutting the circulation off a limb that's trying to heal...
During the week of the surgery we moved her into her own room and from then on she has slept
through the night. She usually wakes up 3 or 4 times a week. Not sure if Zack snores and that was
waking her up or maybe if her hand was bothering her in the night?
Her thumb is good as new now. Still a little swollen though and she likes to keep a bandaid on it.
Oh almost forgot the funniest part!
The first time she saw her stiches they were black and she told me
that there were ants on her hand.
She also would ask me every time if she could do things with her "owie hand"
"mama can I go outside with my owie hand?" etc. She was very good at
protecting it. She even asked once when we were leaving somewhere if she
could go with her "owie hand", cuz you know sometimes we left it at home.
